AI-Powered Search: Semantic, Vector & Hybrid Search
Learn how AI is transforming search technology — semantic search, vector embeddings, hybrid retrieval, and building intelligent search systems. Search is being transformed by artificial intelligence. Traditional keyword-based search systems are giving way to AI-powered approaches that understand meaning, context, and user intent, delivering dramatically better results than Boolean matching ever could. The Limitations of Keyword Search Traditional keyword search matches query terms against document terms. This approach has fundamental limitations. It cannot handle synonyms — searching for "automobile" won't find documents about "car." It struggles with typos and variations — "colour" vs "color." It has no understanding of context or intent — "apple" (fruit) vs "Apple" (company). It cannot rank results by semantic relevance, only by term frequency. Keyword search works well for structured data and exact matches but falls short for content where meaning matters more than terminology. Semantic Search with Embeddings Semantic search uses vector embeddings to capture the meaning of text. Instead of matching exact words, it measures the semantic similarity between a query and documents, finding relevant results even when they use completely different vocabulary. The process works in two phases. Indexing: each document is converted into a vector embedding using a neural network model, and these vectors are stored in a vector database. Querying: the user's search query is converted into the same embedding space, and the database finds the nearest vectors using distance metrics like cosine similarity or dot product.
